1) Introduction:

An FSSAI stands for the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India and it is essential for every food business operators like manufacturers, traders, and food store owners to obtain the license of FSSAI. It is responsible for the issuance of food licenses and protecting, promoting public health through the regulation and supervision of food safety.

The point of obtaining a food license (FSSAI) is to make sure that the food products packed, sold or traded by Food Business Operators stick to the quality standards prescribed by the FSSAI.

Furthermore, there are two types of food licenses depending on the turnover of the food businesses, namely, FSSAI Registration and FSSAI License. FSSAI License is further divided into two parts.

  1. State License
  2. Central License

3) Types of FSSAI License:

  1. Basic FSSAI Registration: Basic FSSAI Registration is required by petty food business operators. The turnover of such business should not be more than Rs.12 lakhs per annum. A petty retailer, hawker, itinerant vendor or temporary stallholders are examples of this category.
  2. FSSAI State License: A business that has a turnover of Rs.12 Lac to Rs.20 Crore or as per category of the business. is eligible for the state food license. Additionally, the turnover limit is the same for an FSSAI State trading license or an FSSAI State Manufacturing license.
  3. Central FSSAI License: This license is for food businesses having a turnover exceeding Rs. 20 Crore or as per category of the business. Manufacturing, Trading and Storage units beyond specified limits are some of the examples of FBOs that come under the category his license.

4) Follwing are the documents required for FSSAI License:

  •  Documents Required for FSSAI Registration:
  1. Completed and signed Form B
  2. Photo identity proof of food business operator
  3. A copy of proof of possession of premise such as rent agreement
  4. MOA, AOA, Partnership deed, etc. – depending on the type of entity
  5. List of food products involved
  6. Plan of food safety management system (FSMS)
  7. Supporting documents (if any) NOC by Municipality/Panchayat, Health NOC
  • Documnets Required for Central license:
  1. Duly signed and completed form b
  2. Blueprint of unit(If Manufacturing or Processing Unit)
  3. List of machinery and equipment used in the unit (If Manufacturing or Processing Unit)
  4. A list of partners, directors, proprietors, etc. depending on the type of entity
  5. Complete list of food items to be dealt with
  6. Sources of various raw materials.
  7. FORM IX (Declaration)
  8. Certificate from ministry of tourism
  9. Certificate from Ministry of Commerce for 100% EOU
  10. Rent agreement or any other proof of possession of the premise
  11. Authority Letter
  12. PA/ NOC document granted by FSSAI
  13. Manufacturer’s NOC and a copy of the license
  14. Declaration Form
  15. Food Safety Management System Certificate (FSMS)
  16. IE code Document issued by DGFT.
  17. Documentary proof of turnover.
  • Documents Required for State License:
  1. Duly signed and completed Form B
  2. Blueprint of unit (If Manufacturing or Processing Unit)
  3. List of machinery and equipment used in the unit (If Manufacturing or Processing Unit)
  4. A list of partners, directors, proprietors, etc. depending on the type of entity
  5. Complete list of food items to be dealt with
  6. Authority Letter
  7. Rent agreement or any other proof of possession of the premise
  8. Food Safety Management System Certificate (FSMS)
  9. Any other required document.
  10. NOC from municipality or local body
  11. Documentary proof of turnover.
  • Additional documents for Manufacturing Unit:
  1. The blueprint of the layout of the processing unit
  2. A list of all machinery or equipment
  3. A list of the categories of food that is to be manufactured
  4. Report on the water for pesticide residues

5) Renewal of License:

All food businesses operate under the rules and regulations given under FSSAI Act 2006. Obtaining FSSAI license is must for every food Business operator. Though, majority of population don’t know that getting FSSAI License renewal is equally important as that of getting FSSAI License. It is necessary to get FSSAI license renewal done within stipulated time period.
